Mike G Chopps and doesn’t Slop Tyler, The Creator, Erykah Badu & Coco Owino’s “TreeHome95”.  Originally off of Tyler’s WOLF, Mike G reinforces the mouth-filling drum beats, accentuating their powder with a series of extended synth whines.

The toe-tapping jazzy original lives on through the almost-unrestrained vocals.  Mike G effectively lowers the fidelity of a few of the original music, infusing it with a skinless aesthetic.  This is almost an “unstop n screw”, to me.  Where the original has clear separations between instruments (except for maybe the synth horn), Mike G unlocks the doors.  Voices extend, windily exacerbating any friction between sounds to a point of fluidity.  He “unstops” the extensions inherent in any sound, spreading each one throughout the work as a whole.  Mike G takes a magnifying mic to these sounds, increasing the range (within each) that we’re aware of.

Mike G understands and exercises the conceptual background of this genre in a deep way : take a song’s parts and reimagine how they could fit together.  You don’t have to fit a formula, and that’s what sets Mike G’s chops apart.  From that idea, he morphs songs differently in ever case.  He honors the original music, placing thoughtful differences into play each time.  Mike G’s creativity with the entire genre of Chop N Screw plays itself out in a host of ways.  No simple repeated cutts to remove corners.  No “treal voice” that would do no more than hashtag his work as Chop N Screw.  Mike G enters these sounds seeking to unlock new potentialities for them, successfully reforming Tyler’s atmosphere.
